What is M. C. Escher’s Zodiac Sign?

M.C. Escher, the famous Dutch graphic artist and printmaker, was born on June 17, 1898, making him a Gemini. Geminis are known for being very adaptive people, able to adjust to any situation with ease and humor. They often have many ideas and interests, from literature, science, art and philosophy, to international travel. They also are said to be drawn to duality for better understanding of complex ideas and concepts, which certainly applies in the case of M.C. Escher, a master of the impossible.

M.C. Escher was born in Leeuwarden, a city in the Dutch province of Friesland. As a child, he did not consider himself to be an artistic prodigy, his father pushing him towards Architecture instead. Young Escher rebelled against this and followed his own path in drawing, particularly focusing on landscapes. He eventually moved up to Italy, settling in Rome for 15 years, which is where his signature style of mathematically-inspired artwork started to take shape. He drew inspiration from his travels, taking pictures and sketches of monuments that would later become foundations for impossible and highly optical illusory art.

Gemini is an Air sign, the power of duality allowing the mind to move in two different directions. These people often prefer to take the mental path than a physical one, which is a great attribute for an artist. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the duality of M.C. Escher’s works is reflective of his zodiac sign and thought processes as he pushed the boundaries of what was possible. His immortalized works are full of elaborate impossible constructions and paradoxical compositions, leaving the viewer to wonder ‘how is this even possible?’. Looking at some of Escher’s work, such as Belvedere and Waterfall, one can see two directions continuously repeating, going into an abyss which hints at the duality of thought which the Gemini sign is known for.

In addition to his most famous works, Escher completed a copious amount of graphic art projects, lithographs, mezzotints and the iconic art of tessellations. His famed works have been seen all over the world, from Los Angeles to London, passing through museums and exhibitions worldwide. He is considered a master of mathematical artwork, having used complex and paradoxical geometric sculptures as his main source of inspiration.

No matter what idea he was exploring, M.C. Escher showed a relentless curiosity in everything he did. As a Gemini, his natural inquisitiveness and want for understanding assisted him in making the most out of his life. Pursuing his true passions, creating art out of mathematical and impossible designs, is reflective of his zodiac sign’s dual mind-set and capability to encompass multiple perspectives. The auspices of his zodiac sign provided the perfect platform to explore his curious and creative inclinations, making M.C. Escher one of the most well-known graphic artists and printmakers of the 20th century.
