Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He was born in Dublin in 1854 and attended Trinity College Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. He was heavily influenced by the writings of John Ruskin, Thomas Carlyle, and Walter Pater and was drawn to mysticism and the aesthetic ideas of the Pre-Raphaelites. During his lifetime, Wilde became one of the most prominent members of the artistic and literary circles of Victorian England.

Wilde wrote a number of poems, essays, stories and plays including “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “The Ballad of Reading Gaol.” He was lauded for his wit and clever use of language. He also challenged social conventions and Victorian morality, exploring topics such as homosexuality, which was highly controversial in his era. Wilde was sentenced to two years of hard labor for “gross indecency,” although he later became an icon of gay and LGBT culture. Despite the disgrace of his prison sentence and his exile from England, he later wrote the poem “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” about the harsh prison life that he experienced.
