Uesugi Kenshin (1530-1578) was an influential samurai warrior of the Sengoku period of ancient Japan who is celebrated to this day. His birthday is thought to be April 28, 1530, making his zodiac sign Taurus. As a Taurus, Uesugi Kenshin was known to be patient and determined, with a great sense of loyalty and resiliency.

Kenshin was born to a samurai family in the province of Echigo, which is now part of modern-day Niigata Prefecture. He took on the family’s name at the age of fourteen after the death of his father. His mother was admired for her bravery and strong character, and so her son Kenshin inherited many of her traits. He was also inspired by his grandfather, Uesugi Tomosada, who still holds a legendary status in his area.

The traits of Kenshin’s sign – Taurus – showed in his life and ultimately led him to great achievements. He was known for his uncanny strategy and battle tactics, in addition to a strong faithfulness to the Takeda clan. Although Uesugi departed from the Takeda clan in 1551, his reputation for loyalty, solidarity, and innovative tactics remained. Uesugi was also known to be a great diplomat and leader, often attempting to solve a situation without resorting to violence. It was this management style that made him a resounding success as a politician and aided his ascendancy up the ranks within the Uesugi family and clan structure.

Another characteristic of Taurus is that they have a strong appreciation for the arts, something that Kenshin was known to be fond of. Uesugi was known to be an accomplished and dedicated poet. In fact, Kenshin’s personal anthology of poetry is still widely read to this day. He created many of his pieces in the renga style – a poetry form with deep roots in Japanese culture.
